THE
YANDINA STREET FESTIVAL has a very colourful history and is testament
to the great community spirit of this hinterland town. Created 32 years
ago as the Good Life Fair by past Yandina Starlight Community locals Dave
Johnson and Roger Westcott, the fair was so popular that it grew into
a weekly event and in 1980 was relocated to the main street of Eumundi
- the beginning of the famous Eumundi Markets.
Meanwhile, the Yandina Spring Fair continued on an annual basis. During a 10-year period, from 1983 to 1993, the Yandina Lions Club, with tremendous effort, successfully continued to organise the event. The main aim of the fair was to hold a family event that showcased the community and catered for all ages and tastes. Organisers implemented different ideas each year and improved the various forms of entertainment which included tours on the steam train (from Brisbane) for three or four years, and the investment of a Town Mare (Mayor) for a street parade. In 1992, the fair changed from Saturday to Sunday to coincide with Father's Day in September and to relieve the town's traders because we had to close the streets on busy Saturday trading. 1994 the Yandina Lions Club disbanded, so the Yandina and District Community Association (YADCA) decided to continue the tradition of holding the event. With a small number of volunteers, YADCA also maintained a high standard of entertainment with which credit must also go to the generosity of the many local traders who have continued to give their support and sponsorship. As Yandina celebrated its 125th birthday in 1996, the fair celebrated its 20th year. This was when the date was changed from September to August to coincide with the town's birthday. That year was a huge fair, which included a guest appearance by cricketer Carl Rackemann. In 1999 the Fair became a stand-alone incorporated committee, known as the Yandina Street Fair Inc, and in the year 2001, the Fair came under the umbrella of the Yandina and District Chamber of Commerce. 'Fair' became the 'Festival' in 1997 to acknowledge the huge growth and atmosphere. The event has contributed many thousands of dollars to community groups and Yandina and North Arm schools over the years and has showcased so much local talent - from school children, sporting groups, community groups and local entertainers. |
